(Dr.) Stanley Chiang, City of Darebin and representing the Victorian Multicultural Commission Esteemed leaders of the Chinese community organizations, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of the Board of Management, the Staff and Volunteers of the Chinese Community Social Services Centre Inc., I welcome you to another significant milestone of the Chinese Victorian community – the Official Opening of the On Luck Chinese Nursing Home - the first of its kind in the State of Victoria Today also officially signifies the beginning of the journey of the Chinese Community Social Services Centre into residential aged care. Well, anyone can have a dream. And, a dream can only be a reality if one works hard enough to achieve it. The journey of this project had undergone significant trials and tribulations but as usual, the goodness of the project ultimately shines through. This dream is envisioned that all people are created equal and to those who are in need of special care, their wishes can be fulfilled with the cooperation and understanding of those who can deliver. OLCNH project is a success, in that, it embraces and brings out the essence of determination, passion, belief, diligence, cooperation in the human nature. It also relates to the Chinese focus on filial piety. It unites the community to rise to the call to support a project which all believes is worthwhile. It is a success story, in that it now provides a home for 60 residents who otherwise will have to reside in an environment and care that may not meet their special needs. OLCNH is a building, and the success depends on the people working within the four walls, the participation of volunteers and the support of the carers. I wish to acknowledge the dedication of Ms. Sandy Liew, the Director of Nursing, Mrs. Jenny Khor, our Care coordinator, Mr. Eric Tang Au-Yeung, our leading chef and all the staff, all under the care, guidance and leadership of the CEO, Ms. Kim Au. OLCNH – a success, but we will not be complacent but we will work on its continuous improvement in the interests of its residents and the care and service provision. OLCNH will always require the support of the three levels of Government and we enjoyed the close liaison with the respective government offices and we will continues to seek their cooperation and advice in the interests of the welfare of the Chinese aged. This come to the question - Whereto from here? The Chinese Aged population among the Victorian community is among one of the fastest growing group in the coming years. 60 beds are just the start and it will not meet the needs and demands. The number of Chinese Victorians aged 65+ as of 2006 is estimated at 9440 and this will increase to a projected number of 22408 by 2021, an increase of 137%. Ideally, this establishment should be expanded and we at the Centre will carefully conduct a feasibility study into doing so. We will do the hard yakka! We will continue to seek the advice from the Governments in our forward planning. We will strive to seek, to find and not to yield. I would like to thank all of you coming to this Opening event. Special thanks to Minister Pyne for making the journey from South Australia, members of the Australian Nursing Home Foundation, Mr. & Mrs. Albert Leung, Mr. & Mrs. Bill Chik from Sydney and the Councillors from across the Melbourne Metropolitan. Special thanks to Donvale Christian College represented here today by Mrs. Evonne Bradley and Ross Henson for allowing us to use their school car-park and the volunteers assisting out in this celebration. Last but not least, I would like to thank, personally, my son Christopher for his moral support, Kim for her dedication and commitment and tremendous assistance to me in the project that we both share in its development, the staff at the Chinese Community Social Services Centre, the volunteers, the members of the community and members of the Board of Management who supported the dream which is now a reality. I would also like to thank the good lord for the opportunity to serve. Thank you. |
